Touring the NE Region

We are having so much fun touring the regions of the United States!  This week we began our journey in the state of Maine and then traveled through New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, Washington D.C. and New York City.  While we were in Pennsylvania, we made cookies, with Hershey kisses of course!  And during our travels through New York City, we enjoyed bagels and tried to walk up the steps of the Empire State Building!  (102 floors!)  We want to thank Mr. R for helping us make our cookies today!

As part of my robots theme this year, I invited my nieces to show the robots they built as part of their high school robotics team.  The robot was built for a competition in which the robot has to shoot frisbees into a designated area.

Students were very excited to Skype with the Michigan author - Johnathan Rand.  He told us about his love for writing and how he began writing his first book at the age of 18.  He also told the students that his favorite part about writing was the editing and revision stage.  Mr. Rand is the author of the very popular series, American Chillers and Michigan Chillers.

Saving Freddy

Students had to save "Freddy" (a gummy worm that had capsized his boat) by helping him put his "life-preserver" on.  This was a team-building activity - and the students loved it!

Skyping Yellowstone National Park

On Jan. 25th the students participated in a skype with Yellowstone National Park.  The students were surprised when I told them that I had a skype planned, but it wasn't a mystery state skype!  Kara, the park ranger, was extremely energetic and very patient with the many questions that we had!  Prior to the skype we viewed the park using one of their webcams.  Students also read the brochure for the park and highlighted things they learned and questions that they had - all not knowing that they would be speaking to the Park Ranger in a matter of minutes!!
